Quick answer

HEIC is Apple's default photo format on iPhones. It stores images in higher quality than JPEG while using about 50% less storage space.

The downside: many Windows PCs, websites, and older devices cannot open HEIC files without extra software or conversion.

If you just need to open or share a HEIC file right now, use our HEIC to JPG converter no install, works in your browser.

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. Every time you take a photo on an iPhone 7 or later running iOS 11+, the camera saves it as a .heic file instead of .jpeg.

Apple adopted this format in 2017 because it produces photos that are roughly half the size of JPEG at the same visual quality. That means more photos on your phone before you run out of storage.

On our converter, HEIC is one of the most uploaded formats especially from iPhone users dealing with Windows compatibility issues or government form submissions that reject .heic files.

The technical side (for those who want the details)

HEIC is Apple's implementation of the HEIF standard (ISO/IEC 23008-12), a container format developed by MPEG. Inside that container, image data is compressed using the HEVC (H.265) codec the same codec used for 4K video.

HEVC uses modern block prediction with up to 64Γ—64 CTUs, which is dramatically more efficient than JPEG's 8Γ—8 DCT compression from 1992. This is the technical reason behind the 50% file size reduction.

HEIC and HEIF are related but not identical. HEIF is the container standard it can hold images compressed with different codecs. HEIC specifically means HEIF + HEVC.

Other devices also produce HEIF files. Samsung Galaxy phones (S10+ onward) save HEIF with .heif or .heic extensions depending on the One UI version. Sony Alpha cameras produce .HIF files at 10-bit 4:2:2 chroma. AVIF is another HEIF variant but using the royalty-free AV1 codec instead of patent-encumbered HEVC.

Why does iPhone use HEIC instead of JPEG?

Four practical reasons.

Storage efficiency. A 12 MP iPhone photo as JPEG weighs 3–5 MB. The same photo as HEIC weighs 1.5–2.5 MB. On a 64 GB phone, that difference means thousands of extra photos.

Live Photos. The HEIF container can hold multiple images, sequences, and audio in a single file. A Live Photo is stored as one .heic file containing all frames plus sound. JPEG cannot do this.

10-bit color and HDR. iPhone 12 Pro and later capture photos in 10-bit HEIC with Display P3 wide color gamut. HEIC supports HDR10 and HLG metadata. JPEG is fixed at 8-bit sRGB it cannot store this extra color information.

Transparency and editing. HEIC supports an 8-bit alpha channel and can store editing operations as metadata rather than rewriting pixel data. JPEG has neither capability.

Why can't I open HEIC files on Windows, Android, or in my browser?

One word: patents.

HEIC uses HEVC (H.265) compression, which is covered by multiple patent pools that charge licensing fees. Any software that decodes HEVC must pay these fees. This cost is why most platforms don't support HEIC by default.

Chrome, Firefox, and Edge do not display HEIC images in web pages on any operating system. Firefox's bug tracker explicitly cites "HEVC patent licensing" as the blocker, with the feature sitting at priority P5 with no engineer assigned. Chrome has the same position.

Only Safari (version 17+) can display HEIC because Apple already pays for HEVC licensing system-wide.

On Windows 10 and 11, HEIC files don't open by default. You need two extensions from the Microsoft Store: the free HEIF Image Extensions and the paid HEVC Video Extensions (~$0.99). Without both, Windows Photos shows a placeholder.

On Android, support depends on the device. Android 10+ with HEVC hardware can display HEIC, but Android browsers still ignore HEIC in web pages.

The royalty-free alternative is AVIF same HEIF container but with AV1 compression. AVIF has broad browser support precisely because AV1 is patent-free.

How to open HEIC files on Windows

Three options depending on how often you deal with HEIC files.

Install Microsoft Store extensions (best for regular use). Search for "HEIF Image Extensions" (free) and "HEVC Video Extensions" (~$0.99). Install both. After that, Windows Photos, File Explorer thumbnails, and most image editors display .heic files correctly. Some newer PCs may have HEVC pre-installed try opening a .heic file before purchasing.

Use iCloud for Windows (automatic conversion). If you sync iPhone photos through iCloud, it can download JPEG copies instead of HEIC originals. Connecting via USB and importing through Windows Photos also typically auto-converts to JPEG.

Convert individual files online (occasional use). Upload the .heic file, download the .jpg. No software needed. Use our HEIC to JPG converter.

How to open HEIC files on Mac

macOS High Sierra (2017) and later support HEIC natively. Preview, Photos, Quick Look, and Finder thumbnails all display .heic files without any additional software.

To convert on Mac: open in Preview, use File β†’ Export, and choose JPEG, PNG, or TIFF. Photos app works the same way via File β†’ Export.

Photoshop CC 2018+, Affinity Photo, and Pixelmator also open HEIC natively on macOS.

How to convert HEIC which format for which situation

For sharing with anyone β†’ convert to JPG. JPEG works on every device, browser, and platform. File size will be roughly 2Γ— larger than HEIC. Use our HEIC to JPG converter.

For design work or transparency β†’ convert to PNG. PNG is lossless and preserves alpha channels. Use our HEIC to PNG converter.

For document submissions β†’ convert to PDF. Government portals, insurance claims, and university admissions often require PDF. Use our HEIC to PDF converter.

For web use β†’ convert to WebP or AVIF. Modern formats with broad browser support and smaller file sizes than JPEG. Use our HEIC to WebP converter.

On iPhone: AirDrop and Messages auto-convert to JPEG when sending to non-Apple devices.

Should you disable HEIC on iPhone?

Keep HEIC enabled if your photos stay within Apple devices and iCloud. You get 50% smaller files, 10-bit color, HDR, and Live Photo support with no compatibility issues.

Disable HEIC (Settings β†’ Camera β†’ Formats β†’ Most Compatible) if you regularly share with Windows or Android users, upload to websites or forms that reject HEIC, or use editing software that doesn't support it.

The practical middle ground: leave HEIC on and convert individual photos when needed. The storage savings add up over thousands of photos, and conversion takes seconds.

Frequently asked questions

What does HEIC stand for?

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is Apple's implementation of the HEIF standard, using HEVC (H.265) compression to store photos at roughly half the file size of JPEG.

Why are my iPhone photos HEIC instead of JPG?

Apple switched to HEIC in iOS 11 (2017) because it produces files roughly 50% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality. To switch back to JPEG, go to Settings, Camera, Formats, and select Most Compatible.

How much smaller are HEIC files compared to JPEG?

Roughly 50% smaller at equivalent quality. A 12 MP iPhone photo is typically 1.5-2.5 MB as HEIC versus 3-5 MB as JPEG.

Can I open HEIC files on Windows?

Yes, but you need two extensions from the Microsoft Store: HEIF Image Extensions (free) and HEVC Video Extensions (about $0.99). Without both, Windows cannot decode HEIC files. Alternatively, convert to JPEG before transferring.

Why don't Chrome, Firefox, and Edge support HEIC?

HEIC uses HEVC compression, which requires patent licensing fees. Browser vendors have not paid these fees. Firefox's bug tracker explicitly cites HEVC patent licensing as the reason. Only Safari (17+) supports HEIC through Apple's system-wide HEVC license.

Is HEIC the same as HEIF?

Not exactly. HEIF is the container standard (ISO/IEC 23008-12). HEIC is a specific variant that uses HEVC compression inside HEIF. Every HEIC file is a HEIF file, but HEIF can also use other codecs for example, AVIF is HEIF with AV1 compression.

Is HEIC better quality than JPEG?

At the same file size, yes HEIC preserves more detail. HEIC also supports 10-bit color and HDR which JPEG cannot store. The main advantage is efficiency: same visual quality at half the file size.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG for free?

Use an online converter upload the .heic file and download the .jpg, no software needed. On Mac, open in Preview and export as JPEG. On iPhone, sharing via AirDrop to non-Apple devices auto-converts to JPEG.
