Frequently Asked Questions

Is the background remover really free?
Yes. Convertify removes image backgrounds free with no signup, no watermark and no file size tricks. The result is full resolution.
What format is the result?
A transparent PNG at your original resolution by default. You can also save as WEBP, or add a white, black or custom color background before downloading.
Does the quality of my image change?
No. The original image resolution is preserved. Only the background is replaced with transparency or a solid color.
Does it work on hair and fur?
It handles most hair and fur well when the subject stands out from the background. Very fine wisps against a busy or similar colored background are the hardest case for any automatic tool and may need a manual touch up.
Do you store my uploaded images?
No. Your image is processed in memory, never written to disk, and discarded as soon as the result is sent. Nothing is stored or used for training.
How do I get a white background for a passport or product photo?
Remove the background, then choose the white background option before you download. A white background is commonly required for passport and ID photos and for many online marketplace listings, though exact rules vary, so check the requirements for your case.
Can I remove the background from multiple images?
Currently images are processed one at a time. Upload each image separately to generate a transparent PNG for each.
What image formats can I upload?
HEIC, HEIF, PNG, JPG, WEBP, AVIF, TIFF, BMP and GIF, up to 20 MB per image.
Why does my transparent PNG look like it has a black or white background?
The image itself is transparent. Some apps show a checkerboard or a solid color in place of transparency. Open it in an editor that supports alpha, or add a real background color in Convertify before downloading.
Is there a limit on how many images I can do?
There is no account and no hard daily cap for normal use. Each image must be 20 MB or smaller.

How to remove a background

Removing a background takes three steps. First, upload your photo by dragging it onto the drop zone or clicking Choose file. Convertify accepts HEIC, HEIF, PNG, JPG, WEBP, AVIF, TIFF, BMP and GIF, up to 20 MB. Second, the background is removed automatically. An image segmentation model detects the main subject and separates it from everything behind it. Third, download your result as a transparent PNG, or add a white, black or custom color background before you save. No account, no watermark and no waiting.

Transparent PNG or a solid background

By default, Convertify returns a transparent PNG: the cutout subject on a fully transparent background, ready to drop into any design, document or store listing. If you need a solid background instead, pick white for a clean studio or marketplace look, black for high contrast, or any custom color with the color picker. The background is composited instantly, so you can switch between transparent, white and color without uploading again. Transparent PNG is the right choice when you will place the subject on another background later. A solid white background is the common choice for marketplace listings and ID photos.

Best uses for a background remover

A clean cutout is useful almost anywhere an image needs to sit on a new background. Common uses include product photography and eCommerce listings, passport and ID photos, logos and brand assets, profile pictures and social media graphics, marketing materials and ad creatives, presentations and slide decks, and school or personal projects. For most of these you will either keep the subject transparent or place it on a plain white background.

TechnologyISNet model on a Rust backend

How Convertify removes backgrounds

Convertify automatically detects the main subject using an ISNet segmentation model. The image is processed on our Rust backend entirely in memory before a transparent PNG is generated, with no GPU required. For anyone curious about the details: the model is the IS-Net dichotomous segmentation architecture, run through ONNX Runtime. libvips resizes a copy of your photo to the model input size and normalizes it into a tensor, the model returns a mask that scores how likely each pixel belongs to the subject, and that mask is resized back to your original size and applied as an alpha channel with libvips to produce a transparent PNG. For very large photos you can first resize with the image resizer, then remove the background.

Edge quality, hair and fine detail

The model handles clean subjects, products, people, animals and logos very well, with sharp edges on most photos. Fine detail like loose hair, fur and thin wisps is the hardest case for any automatic background remover, and the result there depends on the contrast between the subject and the background. A subject that stands out clearly from its background cuts out cleanly. A subject that blends into a busy or similar colored background is harder. Transparent and glass objects are a known limit, since the model cannot always tell where a see through edge ends. For everyday photos, product shots and portraits on a plain background, the cutout is clean and ready to use.

Privacy, your files are never stored

Your photo is processed on our server entirely in memory. Nothing is written to disk, and the image is discarded as soon as the result is sent back to you. There is no account, so nothing is tied to your identity, and your images are never used to train any model or shared with anyone. Background removal happens over an encrypted HTTPS connection.

Supported formats and limits

Convertify accepts HEIC, HEIF, PNG, JPG, JPEG, WEBP, AVIF, TIFF, BMP and GIF as input, up to 20 MB per image. The result is a transparent PNG at your original resolution. You can also save the result as WEBP, or with a white, black or custom color background. If you need a different output format afterwards, run the file through a Convertify converter such as PNG to JPG or PNG to WEBP, or shrink the file with Compress PNG.
