AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format developed by the Alliance for Open Media โ a consortium that includes Google, Apple, Mozilla, Microsoft, and Netflix. It uses the AV1 video codec to achieve compression rates up to 50% better than JPG at the same visual quality. AVIF was finalized as a standard in 2019 and has seen rapid adoption since Chrome added support in 2020. As of 2026, AVIF is supported natively in Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, and Safari 16+, covering over 90% of global browser traffic.
Despite strong browser support, AVIF has very limited support outside the browser. Most desktop photo editors, including older versions of Photoshop and Lightroom, cannot open AVIF files. Social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter do not accept AVIF uploads. Email clients display AVIF inconsistently. Windows Explorer does not show AVIF thumbnails by default. JPG has 30+ years of universal support โ every OS, every app, every platform handles JPG natively. Converting AVIF to JPG gives you a file that works everywhere without compatibility concerns.
| Feature | AVIF | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Up to 50% better than JPG | Baseline standard |
| Browser support | Chrome, Firefox, Safari | All browsers |
| App support | Limited (new format) | Universal (30+ years) |
| Social media | Often rejected | Accepted everywhere |
| Inconsistent display | Always displays | |
| Photo editors | Partial support | Native support |
| Transparency | Supported (alpha) | Not supported |
| HDR support | Yes | No |

Adobe Photoshop added AVIF support in version 23.2 (2022), but only for import โ export support came later and requires the Camera Raw plugin. Lightroom Classic added AVIF support in version 11.4. GIMP supports AVIF via the libavif plugin. Affinity Photo added AVIF support in version 2. However, many users still run older versions that lack AVIF support. Windows 11 can open AVIF files natively since the 22H2 update, but Windows 10 requires the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store. Converting to JPG eliminates all compatibility concerns across every version of every application.
Converting AVIF to JPG involves re-encoding the image, which introduces some quality loss. Both AVIF and JPG are lossy formats, so some image data is discarded during encoding. The amount of quality loss depends on the JPG quality setting used during conversion. At high quality settings (90+), the visual difference is imperceptible in everyday use. At lower quality settings, you may notice increased compression artifacts particularly in smooth gradients and fine detail. Convertify converts at high quality settings by default, producing JPG output that looks visually identical to the original AVIF for most practical purposes. The main practical difference is file size โ JPG files will be significantly larger than the original AVIF.
AVIF supports full alpha channel transparency. JPG does not support any form of transparency. When you convert an AVIF file that contains transparent areas to JPG, the transparent pixels are replaced with a solid color โ white by default. If your AVIF image has a transparent background (common for logos, icons, and product photos), you should convert to PNG instead of JPG to preserve the transparency. Convertify supports both JPG and PNG as output formats โ choose PNG from the output format selector if transparency is important for your use case.
On Windows 11: AVIF support was added natively in the Windows 11 22H2 update (2022). The Photos app can open AVIF files directly. Windows Explorer shows AVIF thumbnails. On Windows 10: You need the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store (free). Without it, AVIF files show as blank icons and cannot be opened in the Photos app. Converting to JPG is the simplest solution for Windows 10 users. On Mac: macOS Ventura (13) and later support AVIF natively in Preview and Finder. Earlier macOS versions require third-party apps. On Linux: Most distributions support AVIF via libavif, which is included in recent versions of GNOME Image Viewer and other apps.
Convertify supports batch conversion of AVIF files. Upload up to 10 AVIF images at a time and download them all as JPG in a single operation. This is particularly useful when converting AVIF images downloaded from web pages, preparing images for social media upload, converting a web image library for desktop use, or sharing AVIF photos with users on older devices. Drag and drop your AVIF files onto the converter, select JPG as the output format, and click Convert. All files are processed simultaneously and ready for download within seconds.
Convertify processes all files server-side using an encrypted HTTPS connection. Your files are never stored permanently โ they are deleted immediately after conversion and download. No account is required to use Convertify, and no personal data is collected beyond what is necessary for the conversion process. Convertify does not analyze, share, or use your image content for any purpose other than performing the conversion you requested. Files are purged from the server within 6 hours even if not downloaded.
Convertify uses a Rust backend with libvips โ one of the fastest image processing libraries available. libvips uses a demand-driven streaming architecture that processes images without loading the entire file into memory. This makes it particularly efficient for large AVIF files. The conversion pipeline handles color space conversion (AVIF uses YUV color space, JPG uses YCbCr), EXIF metadata preservation, and proper chroma subsampling. Conversion happens server-side in milliseconds. Your file is never stored permanently and is deleted immediately after download.
