Quick comparison to help you choose the right format
PNG is the universal lossless format. Every OS, every app, every image editor supports PNG natively. AVIF has limited support outside browsers โ most desktop apps, social platforms, and design tools cannot open AVIF files. PNG preserves every pixel exactly and supports full transparency.
Yes โ AVIF supports alpha channel transparency. When converting AVIF to PNG, transparency is fully preserved. This makes AVIF-to-PNG conversion ideal for logos, icons, and cutout images that need to work outside the browser.

Convertify uses Rust with libvips for fast, accurate conversion. Transparency from AVIF files is preserved in the PNG output. No account required, files deleted after download.
Designers frequently receive AVIF images from web sources or modern browsers and need to bring them into Figma, Sketch, Photoshop, or Illustrator. None of these tools support AVIF natively as of 2026. Converting to PNG gives you a file that opens instantly in any design tool, preserves transparency for compositing, and maintains full pixel quality for further editing. PNG is the standard interchange format between web and design workflows.
Choose PNG when your image has transparency, contains text or sharp edges, will be edited further, or needs to be re-saved multiple times without quality loss. Choose JPG when you need smaller files for sharing, email, or social media and the image is a photograph without transparency. PNG files are typically 3-5x larger than AVIF but contain lossless data โ the right tradeoff when quality and compatibility matter more than file size.
PNG uses lossless compression โ every pixel is stored exactly. AVIF uses lossy compression by default, achieving dramatically smaller files. Converting from AVIF to PNG will increase file size significantly: a 200 KB AVIF photograph typically becomes a 1.5โ3 MB PNG, a 3โ8ร increase depending on image complexity. This is expected and correct behavior โ PNG is storing more data than the compressed AVIF. For simple graphics with flat colors, the increase is smaller. For photographs with fine detail, PNG files can be very large. If file size is a concern, consider JPG instead of PNG for photographic content; keep PNG for graphics, logos, and images with transparency.
Photoshop added native AVIF open/edit/save in version 26.8 (June 2025) โ but AVIF is not yet available in the 'Export As' or 'Save for Web' dialogs, limiting its practical use in Photoshop workflows. Older Photoshop versions require a third-party plugin. GIMP has supported AVIF since version 2.10.22 (October 2020), making it the earliest major editor to adopt the format. Figma does not support AVIF natively โ nor WebP for that matter โ and requires plugins for either format. Sketch can import WebP but not AVIF. If you are working in any of these tools and receive AVIF files, converting to PNG is the reliable path to universal design tool compatibility.
