Quick comparison to help you choose the right format
JPG has been the default photo format for over 30 years โ it works everywhere. But JPG's compression algorithm (DCT-based, standardized in 1992) is showing its age.
HEIC uses the HEVC codec (H.265) which achieves roughly 50% better compression than JPG at equivalent visual quality. A 4 MB JPG photo from a digital camera typically becomes a 2 MB HEIC file with no visible difference.
If your photos will primarily live on Apple devices, HEIC saves meaningful storage space โ especially when you have thousands of photos in your library. For web delivery, consider JPG to WebP or JPG to AVIF instead.
HEIC is native on all Apple devices running iOS 11+ and macOS High Sierra+. Photos, Preview, Quick Look, iMovie, Final Cut Pro, and all Apple apps handle it natively. iCloud Photo Library stores and syncs HEIC without conversion.
Outside Apple, support is patchy. Windows 11 opens HEIC natively. Windows 10 requires the HEIF Image Extensions codec. Android has no native HEIC support. No browser except Safari displays HEIC.
Most social media platforms accept JPG but not HEIC directly โ though iOS automatically converts when sharing. If you need to convert HEIC back to JPG later, Convertify handles that too.
| Feature | JPG | HEIC |
|---|---|---|
| Compression codec | DCT (1992) | HEVC / H.265 |
| Compression efficiency | Baseline standard | ~50% better than JPG |
| Transparency | Not supported | Supported |
| Color depth | 8-bit per channel | 8โ10 bit per channel (HDR capable) |
| Browser support | All browsers | Safari only |
| Apple device support | Supported | Native (iOS 11+) |
| Windows support | Universal | Win 11 native / Win 10 requires codec |
| Android support | Universal | Not supported |
| Best for | Universal sharing | Apple ecosystem storage |
For typical smartphone photos, HEIC at equivalent perceptual quality produces files 40โ50% smaller than JPG. For images with fine detail and textures (landscapes, architecture), savings tend toward 40%. For simpler scenes with large uniform areas, savings can reach 55โ60%.
Note that converting an existing JPG to HEIC involves decoding the JPG and re-encoding as HEIC โ this is a lossy-to-lossy conversion that introduces a small additional quality reduction. The visual impact is minimal at high quality settings, but it is not zero. If you have access to the original uncompressed source, converting directly to HEIC produces better results.
Since iOS 11, iPhone cameras default to HEIC format. But photos received via email, messaging apps, downloaded from the web, or transferred from older cameras arrive as JPG. This creates a mixed-format library consuming more iCloud storage than necessary.
Converting imported JPGs to HEIC before adding them to your Photos library ensures consistent format and optimal storage usage. When you later share these photos, iOS handles format conversion automatically โ sending HEIC as JPG to non-Apple recipients.
No. Converting from JPG to HEIC cannot recover quality that was already lost during JPG compression. JPG is a lossy format โ it discards high-frequency image detail during encoding, and that data is gone permanently.
Re-encoding as HEIC compresses the already-degraded image data using a more efficient codec, producing a smaller file, but it does not restore the original detail. The value of JPG to HEIC conversion is purely about file size reduction and format consistency โ not quality improvement.
HEIC supports 10-bit color depth and HDR metadata, which JPG cannot. iPhone 12 and later capture HDR photos natively in HEIC using Dolby Vision or HLG.
When you convert a standard 8-bit JPG to HEIC, the output remains 8-bit โ you cannot gain HDR capability from a non-HDR source. However, having everything in HEIC format means your library viewer handles the files consistently.
Convertify uses a Rust backend with libvips for JPG decoding and libheif for HEIC encoding. The conversion pipeline preserves color profiles (sRGB, Display P3) and EXIF metadata including orientation, camera model, and GPS coordinates.
