Quick comparison to help you choose the right format
HEIC is Apple's default photo format used across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Converting JPG to HEIC reduces file size by roughly 50% compared to JPG at equivalent visual quality. If you manage a large photo library on Apple devices or iCloud, storing images as HEIC frees up significant storage space. HEIC also supports better color depth and HDR metadata than standard JPG.
HEIC files work natively across the entire Apple ecosystem โ iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Photos, iCloud Photo Library, and macOS Preview. iOS 11 and later open HEIC natively. macOS High Sierra and later support HEIC in all system apps. Outside Apple devices, HEIC has limited support โ Windows requires the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, and most Android devices cannot open HEIC files natively.
If you have a large collection of JPG photos you want to import into your iPhone or Mac photo library, converting to HEIC first reduces the storage footprint significantly. A 4MB JPG typically becomes a 1.5-2MB HEIC file with no visible quality difference. This is especially useful when migrating photos from a camera or older device to an Apple ecosystem workflow.
| Feature | JPG | HEIC |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Baseline | ~50% better than JPG |
| Transparency | Not supported | Supported |
| HDR support | No | Yes |
| Browser support | All browsers | Safari only |
| App support | Universal | Apple ecosystem |
| Best for | Universal sharing | Apple storage & quality |
The storage savings from converting JPG to HEIC are substantial. HEIC uses the HEVC codec which achieves roughly twice the compression efficiency of JPEG. A typical 12MP iPhone photo is about 3-4MB as JPG and 1.5-2MB as HEIC at equivalent quality. For a library of 10,000 photos, this difference amounts to 15-25GB of storage saved.
Converting JPG to HEIC does not recover quality that was lost during the original JPG compression. JPG is a lossy format โ once image data is discarded during encoding, it cannot be restored. What HEIC offers is better compression efficiency going forward: if you re-encode a JPG as HEIC at the same visual quality level, the HEIC file will be smaller.
Convertify uses Rust with libvips and libheif for accurate JPG to HEIC conversion. The conversion preserves color profiles and EXIF metadata from the original JPG. Files are processed server-side and deleted within 6 hours. No account required.
